To Buy Crave (J.R. Ward) or Not to Buy Crave that is the question…

I know, I know you are not ‘supposed’ to compare BDB (for the uninitiated that’s Black Dagger Brotherhood) with Fallen Angles but I can’t help it. I’m in hearts with all the brothers and wanted the same relationship to happen with the Fallen series. (My emotional grid was all over the place…you actually can’t see that I just fist bumped myself)). But seeing as how Covet was a mite disappointing, I felt the need to pump the brakes and take a knee before I bought the new installation to the series, Crave. I was still feeling a bit sore from my initial jubilation smack down, and didn’t want to get my hopes up that Crave would be any better.

Oh, how I doubted my bestie, fav author. Ward, made a major improvement with her second book in the series and Crave is substantially better than Covet, by giant sized leaps and bounds.  Now, it’s been a while between books so other than remembering Jim, fallen angels, and some crazy demon chick named Devina I was drawing a blank on the details of this series. The beginning is a bit confusing, actually I could have done without that whole part until our main man,  Isaac,  meets up with his lawyer, Grier Childe. Perhaps I was having a blond moment or not enough Ginko Biloba in my diet but once Grier and Isaac crossed paths the book became far more interesting. Why it was automatic, it was systematic, it was hydromatic! Why it was  greased lightnin’!

Isaac is an awoled man on the run from the XOps (anyone else thinks that sounds dirty…). He is trying to survive by doing a little illegal MMA fighting to make some money. Nobody could fault Ward for being urbanely current.  So, after being in an underground bust by the  police, in walks his super foxy lawyer, Grier Childe.  Grier has her own demons to slay and tries to keep them at bay by doing pro bono work.
Jim must once again battle the uber creepy Devina as part of the ‘Seven’ souls he must win for team good, otherwise the world will fall under the rule of evil. Nothing like a little pressure . As with Covet the soul Jim must save is never as cut and dry as it may seem and just because he has one on team evil doesn’t mean he can get cocky. Devina has grown more desperate to win and the stakes have just been raised.

I would have like more paranormal aspects with Devina and her demons, although there is one creepy scene where Jim makes a bargain with the demon to stay with her for a night. I may have been emotionally scared by that one. Sadistic torture can definitely leave a lasting imprint.   What makes Crave stand out from Covet, is the  characters.  Grier was a much more interesting character and paired with Isaac’s southern gentleman charm and one badass demon – made for a great combination.

So, if you were sitting on the fence on this one, your ol pals KC and K-Khan give it the Smokin Hot Stamp of approval. Other than the confusing beginning you don’t want to miss out on this one because Ward can still weave one bad ass story and with a surprise twist at the end.

  1. Glad you took the gamble and won :) I didn’t finish Covet, so I don’t think I’ll be picking up this series as I have no clue how things turned out in the first book. It’s my book OCD having it’s way with me again…unless….can you read this one without knowing what happened in the 1st book? Maybe I could read the Cliff notes.

  2. I too have had an inner battle with myself over this book KC. I wrongly went into ‘Covet’ thinking i’d fall madly in love with the angels as i did the brothers, Ward is my crack and i thought she was going to feed my fix so i was heartbreakingly disappointed i didn’t love Covet, i can’t even say i liked it that much, it had some qualities that i saw potential with, characters i want to see again.

SO it brings me to Crave! Yes, i was weak, i HAD to buy it. I still haven’t read it, and your review gives me a glimmer of hope that yay i may like it. But i scurred!

I wish she’d drop the angels and give us two BDB books a year. Oops..should i have said that out loud? heh! sorry to those who love the angels, but i am a Brother Ho’

Im going to read Crave, i AM! *cracks knuckles* I fear im going to have the same problem as you and not remember any details from Covet. doh.

  3. I was disappointed w’Covet and still onthe fence w/Crave. We shall see. Great review though Ms KC. :)

  4. So glad to hear you guys liked this one better than Covet. I tried really hard not to compare these to the BDB, but I failed miserably and held this series to the Brothers standard and, like you, was disappointed. It sounds like Isaac and Grier are at least a little more interesting than the pair in Covet, so I’m looking forward to reading it:) Thanks for the review!

  5. @Patti I think you’d be really lost w/o reading book 1, hell I was lost and I read Covet O_o

@Claire (Sparklybearsy) the beginning was the only issue I had with the whole book, after you get though that the story picks up and you are not so confused. I have a feeling Ward will write books about the fallen angles ie Jim.

@Tori Crave sooo much better with the action.

@Jenny I definetlty liked Isaac and Grier as main charcs vs whatstherenames in Covet.

  6. I’m so happy CRAVE got your seal of approval!! I still have to mustar up the courage to start COVET before I can crack the spine…or in my case gentle open CRAVE ;)

  7. Glad you enjoyed it! I just picked it up at Borders this weekend. I just finally finished Lover Mine and am in a post-LM funk. I don’t wanna leave the Brothers. So I started reading the Insiders Guide….now I want to re-read all the BDB books! LOL sigh.

  8. I admit I bought it for the sole purpose of reading the excerpt of Lover Unleashed! Ward will never top or come close to a series that can compare to the BDB/IMO. Great reveiw girl. ;)

  9. @Leontine I’m really hoping Ward eventually writes books about the angels *crosses fingers*

@Mollie OMG Lover Mine was one of Ward’s best books evah!!!

@amy love-uh-ve the excerpt for Lover Unleashed.

  10. Thanks for the stamp. I think I needed it. I was on the fence and those darn spires were poking me. *ouch* However, I think I may delve more into the brotherhood first before I go on with this one.

  11. @Melissa duuuuuuuude you needs to read Lover Mine. BDB series is one of my favs.

  12. I haven’t read Covet yet, but I guess I’ll have to dive into it to read Crave. Looks interesting (even if a certain scene emotionally scarred you, LOL).

  13. Covet was just okay for me. I’ve been on the fence about reading Crave but you’ve convinced me. It’s not going to be on the top of my TBR list but I’ll be sure to read in the somewhat near future :)

  14. Thanks for posting this. Now I don’t feel so alone in my disappointment at Covet, which I liked, but not like I adore the early BDB stories. I requested it from the library… where disappointment doesn’t cost anything.

  15. @MamaKitty I liked Covet, it didn’t wow me like Ward’s BDB series, but Ward definitely ups the wow factor for Crave.

@The Book Vixen I felt the same way! Crave has a few interesting twists and you get more one on one time with the main romance and sexy Jim and his fallen angels.

@Evanne Your library carries J.R. Ward?!!!! Cool ;)

  16. I really liked Cover a lot. I plan on picking up Crave this weekend. Woo Hoo!

  17. I agree these characters were a little better…I also agree with the 3.5 ;)

Maybe each book will work it’s way up and be better than the previous one? :)

  18. I’m afraid I’ll never like anything by Ward except BDB. The brothers really leave a lasting impression and it’s hard not to compare her other works. Maybe one day I’ll get on the fallen angel craze, who knows.

  19. @Tiah Woo hoo!!!

@Mandi I wanted to give it a 4 but the beginning O_o I felt like I had to phone a friend to figure it out.

PS I’m already matching making with Jim and the blond girl that was killed by Devina in book 1.

@Fiction Vixen I’m hoping Ward will eventually write about the angels, which will make the series more interesting.

  20. Oooookaaay! I’ll read it!!! I liked Covet! It was definitely not BDB but it was enjoyable. Thanks for the review :D

  21. Thanks for the review… I enjoyed Covet and I have bought Crave, but I just don’t know when I’ll get to it.

  22. Thank you! I’ve got in my TBR but I’ve been avoiding it. Now I know what I’ll be having for Thanksgiving!
