Favorite Quote: ‘Why don’t you put me in a minivan, zip me up in mom jeans and shoot me in the head’ Lanthe says to Carrow

———–>    If you have not read previous book and don’t want to be spoiled look away right now.

Demon from the Dark introduces us to a new type of bad, an evil group of mortals who refer to themselves as the “Order”. The Order is not ‘in-hearts’ with anything or anyone who happens to be immortal and thus contrives a scheme to kidnap some of our fav Lorepeople. Carrow, bad ass witch extrodinaire, Regin-The Radiant, Lanthe (evil sorceress sissy to Sabine Queen of illusions aka Rysdrom’s wifey), Lotharie, the Lykae twins and a few of those that have been kidnapped. No one knows what the Order wants, least of all Carrow; but those trisky humans have got her by the short hairs. Do their bidding or they’ll kill someone very close to her. Nope, I’m not gonna tell you who that is, you’ll just have to read to find out. All Carrow knows is that she must descend into the demon realm, find a vemon (an abomination of demon and vampire), and convince him to come back and be taken by the Order.

Malkom

Malkom Slaine was born to a whore, sold as a child be be some sick vampire’s blood slave and was forced to kill his one and only friend in order to survive. Betrayed by his own kind and basically everyone else in his life, Malkom’s will has been forged by blood and torture, escaping and killing his his ‘vemon’ (demon/vampire) maker, he escapes to Oblivion where he lives like the beast he has become. Battered by life, hardened by betrayal, Malkom’s only connection to his humanity is through his thirst for vengeance.

When Carrow Graie had awakened from her abduction a week ago, she’d had a raging headache, cotton mouth, and a metal collar affixed around her neck.

Things had only gone downhill from there.

Tonight I might be hitting rock bottom, she thought as warden Fegley—a billyclub-carrying, no-balled loser—forced her down the corridor of cells to her doom.

“Dead Wicca walking,” the centaurs’ leader sneered from their cell as Carrow passed. He, like every other Lore creature imprisoned here in the immortal menagerie, suspected she was about to be offed.

“Shut the fuck up, Mr. Ed,” she said, earning a harsh yank on her collar from Fegley. Glaring at the mortal, she struggled against her cuffs. “Once I get my powers back, Fugley, I’ll curse you to fall in love. With your own bodily functions. If it comes out of your body, your heart will long for it.”

“Then I guess I’m lucky you’ve got this on.” Another jerk on the band at her neck—the mortals called it a torque. It mystically nullified her abilities and weakened her physically. Every species here had been hobbled in some way, making them controllable, even by mortals like Fegley. “Besides, witch, what makes you so sure you’re going to make it past the next hour?”

If these people execute me, I’m going to be sooo pissed. Unfortunately, that appeared to be in the cards. At the very least, she was about to be tortured or experimented on.

Hell, maybe then she could find out why anyone would have gone to the trouble of abducting her.

Will Carrow betray Malkom….

I knew I fell in love with Demon from the Dark when Carrow asked herself, What would Ripley do? As in bad-ass, ‘I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure’, alien ass-kicker Lt. Ripley. Instead of WWJD it is WWRD (and yes I’d buy the bumper sticker and matching bracelet is someone made one). This is by far, is my new favorite book of the series. Malkom’s story is not a pretty one, yet even in the guise of all that pain, he manages to still retain a shred of humanity when it comes to Carrow. I liked the fact that Carrow and Malkom spoke different languages. It added an interesting dynamic coupled with a great backstory, this book was by far the most riveting. And this is why I couldn’t put this book down. Hell, I even called my girls night out short so I could finish this book. I also confess to sneaking away during work hours and reading on my iphone in the bathroom stall. I’m not proud of myself.

This is one of the best IAD books of the series and if you haven’t picked up this book I WILL UNFRIEND YOU. I kid. I joke. Well…maybe, I might give you a bit of stink eye but I’m working on my passive aggressive tendencies. Smokinhotbooks says “Don’t miss out on this book” or she might be forced make you listen to the Barney Clean-Up song, with the matching dances.

Books in the Series I heart:

A Hunger Like No Other #1

Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night #3

Dark Desires After Dusk #5

Kiss of a Demon King #6

Pleasure of a Dark Prince #7

  1. Oh, we share a favorite quote :D I just loved Lanthe and I hope she receives her story ASAP. The back and forth interaction coming from her will be AWESOME!! I finished DftD in one day and I agree that it is one of the best this series has to offer. As I said on twitter, I want kissie and bath time with Malkom *sigh*

  2. Oh no – I’m 4 books behind on this series – what happened? Going to go through my TBR pile this weekend and find them so I can start reading them again – I love this series, how did I get so far behind *cries*!?!

  3. I so have to start reading this series. :sigh:

  4. Hey Smokin! As soon as I finished this book I wanted to reread it again. Sooooo awesome….

Funny story about Ripley/Aliens, which is my all-time favorite pro-feminist movie…favorite scene is when Ripley loads up on ammo in Aliens 2 right before she goes to search for Newt…I love it so much that when I used to teach 9th grade biology, I would show my class the movie Aliens as an example of insect biology! Hee heee….needless to say, my students totally loved me!

I couldn’t stop reading this one either….I think my husband was irked with me when I ignored him!

  5. I LOVED this book!!!Malkom is soooo hawt but so vulnerable. Carrow made my “girls I wanna make out with” list I can’t wait for Regan’s story.

  6. I had to put this one down at chapter 3. I couldn’t figure out what the heck was going on! I’ll try again today.

  7. I want to have babies with this book.

  8. @Leontine *crosses fingers* I want Regin’s and Lanthe’s story ASAP. Who do we think Lotharie’s future mate will be…?

@Patti I think if you read the last book you’ll be a-ok. Most of these can kind of be read as stand-alones but you miss the character nuances. If you need the Smokinhot Cliffnotes version I am here for you!

@Colette Gasp, you have to! Immortals After Dark is one of my fav paranormal romance series.

@Penelop I love the Aliens overtones in this book, she has to take care of a little girl and fight bad guys.

@Tori I can’t believe you know who was torturing Reign, I think I gasped out loud.

@Fiction Vixen OMG really? Is this your first IAD book? Basically all these Lore creatures (from previous books) have been captured by the Order (crazy humans) to either be experimented on or exterminated. I am available 24/7 to answer any IAD questions.

@Katiebabs Seriously! I’ve got it bad for this book.

  9. *Hangs head in shame and exposes soft underbelly*

I have not read this series, but it is on my wishlist (and seriously now even more so). *sneaks a peek and quickly bows head again*
I’d make you that bracelet! *looks hopefully*
Am I off the bad list yet?

  10. Page 121 is the best page in the whole book. Laughed heard reading that scene.

  11. @Melissa (Books and Things) I need a pinky swear!

@katiebabs is that where he pours water over her boobies?

  12. I love that “What Would Ripley Do” – I think I need to apply that to my everyday life!

  13. When she tells him the only thing she knows in Demonish. ;)

  14. TOTALLY 5 Smooches for me too! Kresley Cole can write snark and humor like nobody else, omg, when Carrow, Malkolm and Ruby are fleeing the building and war is going on and she hears Regin shouting “Time to rock out with our cocks out!” I laughed out loud. There are so many parts that I laughed out, when she yells at him for “nut”ting on her, HAHAHA. Whew. I LOVED this book, Malkolm killlled me with his statements when he was learning english. SIGH. Loved!!

  15. @Heather (DarklyReading) move over Jesus, it’s all about WWRD.

    @katiebabs Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

@spazP I loved that Malkom’s first English word was Sex.

  16. @ KC – and he kept repeating it too HAHAHA “Sex?” “Sex?” And then she’d lure him with it, “Sex!” so freaking funny.

WHO DO WE THINK WILL BE REGIN’S HEA?!

  17. @Spaz it has to be he who shall not be named, which will make for an interesting book. I also can’t wait to get my hands on Lanthe’s HEA.

Who is Lotharie going to end up with? And why can’t I remember him from previous books…was he the one who helped Sabine (Rydstrom’s wifey)

  18. Pinky swear that it is on my wishlist? Sure no probs. ;)

However, I’m going to do some experimentation… so I actually may get a bracelet to you. It may take me some time, however. *whimper*

  19. A 5! I’m only on book 3 in this series, so I need to get moving! I’m loving them so far, I don’t know why it took me so long to read Kresley Cole *smacks head*:)

  20. KC/Smokinhotbooks

@Jenny Wicked Deeds on Winter’s Night my fav you’ll love Bowen and Mariketa

    @Melissa Gasp, I wants it!

  21. @ KC & Jenny – OMG Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night is my favorite one too, Bowen and Mari ARE AWESOMESAUCENESS!

  22. I love all of the IAD series(okay not so much Rydstrom and Sabines story). Started with Cadeon’s story and had to read the entire series. Regin’s book comes out in February. She’s taking too long! I’m dying to know how Kres is going to explain why the Berserker has gone berserk. Last in the book Regin was doing okay talking smack again. It looks like Lanthes store with the Vrekner won’t be far behind.
