In Maggie Stiefvater’s Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other. Now, inLinger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past…and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack. And Isabel, who already lost her brother to the wolves…and is nonetheless drawn to Cole. At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love–the light and the dark, the warm and the cold–in a way you will never forget.
Linger pulls you in within the first line:
This is a story of a boy who used to be a wolf and a girl who was becoming one.
Linger picks up right after Shiver with Sam and Grace going about their daily lives. Sam, remains unsure if the ‘cure’ really works still shivers when the temperature drops to freezing. New characters, or new to me characters, since I have a bad memory – are introduced. Former musician Cole and tough girl Isabel are added to the list. Much as I liked the first book, Linger is told from multiple point of views, at times only brief paragraphs of Sam’s feelings about Grace, or whole chapters devoted to Cole’s flashbacks with addictions. I haven’t read many books where authors can pull this off without getting nausea and throwing off your pace. This is one book that really pulls this off.
A majority of the book focuses on Cole and why he wanted to become a wolf. I’m always surprised when the young author adds adult themes like addiction, promiscuity and suicide. All topics that seem to work for Cole’s character as a transformative platform illustrating what he used to be to what he has now become. Cole is definitely one of the more interesting characters in this ensemble cast. Meanwhile, the precocious Isabel, who lost her twin brother to ‘the cure’, – finds herself oddly enamored of the mysteries Cole. But there’s trouble ahead, Grace is starting to show signs of wolf; her scent starts to change, her sense of smell grows stronger, and then she gets the ‘fever’.
Linger is eloquently written about a wolf who became a boy and fell in love with a girl. For most of the book the pacing is a bit slow, which I didn’t mind but I think you definitely have to be in the mood for this style of writing. Maggie Stiefvater has one of the more interesting paranormal shapeshifter series out there. If you were hoping to learn more on how the Wolves of Mercy Falls came to be, sorry no such luck in this one perhaps in her next installmet.
If you loved Shiver you can’t miss this one. I mean it!

Thanks for the review. I wasn’t planning on rushing out to get this book. I think I’ll wait my turn for the library copy.
However, that first line is quiet amazing. It would of drew me in right away!
Great review! I can’t wait to read this book. Just that first line alone has me thinking I should just go out and buy it instead of waiting to get it from the library.
@bells As always we’re the opposite! LOL! I was just thinking as I read the review that I’ll just wait for it to come in from my library instead of buying it!
@Twisted Whenever I read books by Maggie STiefvater I’m always surprised on how much I like them. Although, her stories tend to be more slow moving and you definitely have to be in the mood for it.
I wish there was a library closer to me *pouts*
@Bells I was checking book prices on Amazon, even though it is hardback I think it was $9.99. Also, Target usually sells YA books at a lower price. I love Target.
I think I’m the only person left who hasn’t read this series yet. I’m really going to have to fix that! Great review
Nice review. I’ll be reading this one very soon.
I’m not much of a YA reader, I think I like my books a wee bit smexier.
Great review!
I’ve seen a lot of buzz around blog land about this series but since I don’t read enough YA to even be considered a patron, I haven’t paid much attention. However, your mention of the opening novel line has me seriously intrigued. Its horrifyingly sad to read that a wolf becomes a boy only to fall in love with a girl that’s becoming a wolf. Very intriguing.
Great review even if it was an okay read for you.
@colette I know Katiebabs was doing a Giveaway for Shiver and Linger *wiggles eyebrows* maybe you could win a copy!
@Fiction Vixen *note to self* do not email FV with Linger spoilers.
@Janna Oh I’m with you on the smexy aspect
@VFG I think this counts as my first YA book this year *gulps*
Nice review! I read Shiver and agree with you that the pacing is a bit slower than I’m typically used to and you have to be in the right frame of mind to tackle it. I did thoroughly enjoy her characters though, so I might have to go pick this one up and learn about Cole:)
Me wants this! Lucky…
Sure… write a review to make me want it even more.
Yep, I’ll be getting this one.
@Jenny I totally agree. I think I was in the mood for something a bit slower because I’ve been devouring mainly erotic romance and Paranormal Romance. Cole and Isabel took center stage for me in Linger.
@Melissa all part of my evil plan *tee-hee*
This really nice girl sent me Shiver like 500 years ago to read.
*hangs head*
Thanks for the review. I have yet to read Shiver. I am not sure if I’ll be adding it to my TBR list, but I’ve heard good things.
@Mandi *chokes on coffee* If we maybe cut out pic of Brandon Flowers super glue on Shiver cover…you think it will entice you to read it?
@Twimom I will still love you anyways
I have yet to start this series. Great review sweetie!!
I also loved Linger and Shiver!! I think that Cole has got to be my new favorite
Plus, Isabelle’s inability to sensor her thoughts is so hilarious. A great relief from the seriousness of the paranormal influences in the novel, acting almost as a foil to Grace and Sam’s dramatic romance. All-in-all, an amazing series!
