Web of Lies Giveaway: Top 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Jennifer Estep

in Guest Posts, Urban Fantasy 48 Comments

The lovely Jennifer Estep is playing over here today at Smokinhotbooks. She is nice enough not only to answer my questions but also include a giveaway of her book, Web of Lies (read review here).  I can’t tell you how much I heart this series, but enough of about me, lets find out 10 things we don’t know about author Jennifer Estep…

10. When writing my first draft of a book, I have been known to write lines like “And then stuff happens” or “And then something blows up.” That’s why it’s called a (very) rough draft. LOL.

(KC quickly deletes secondary title Top 10 Stuff We Don’t Know About….)

9. I love a good action/adventure/spy/swashbuckling movie. Some of my favorites are Casino Royale, The Princess Bride, and the first Pirates of the Caribbean.

KC: I often quote,”My name is Indigo Montoya” to random people at work functions.

8. I have pretty eclectic taste when it comes to music. Some of my favorite singers/bands include folks like Jimmy Buffett, The Killers, The Pretenders, and Kelly Clarkson. I also love oldies music.

KC: Gasp, I have all these bands on my Ipod!

7. I love, love, love fantasy books/movies/TV shows, but I don’t particularly care for the sci-fi genre. Give me some magic, spells, and swords, and I’m happy. Aliens and spaceships? Not so much. Weird, I know.

KC:(Makes big gaspy noises) How can you not love the movie Aliens Jennifer Estep?!!! Kidding, I sometimes play with my husband’s ring and murmur, “One ring to rule ‘em all.”

6. Random things that I hate: peas, coconut, licorice, and the color yellow.

KC: Currently, all my walls are yellow in my condo,-I too hate yellow but am too lazy to paint. Vicious cycle.

5. Random things that I love: cooking (especially desserts), going to the library/bookstore, sleeping late, and rainy days.

4. When I read, I want to be entertained. That’s why I love reading (and writing) genre fiction so much. Give me romance and fantasy and adventure any day. I read enough literary “classics” in college. LOL. Some of my favorite authors include Robin McKinley, David Eddings, Donald Westlake, Robert Parker, and Linda Lael Miller.

3. I have a weakness for cheese fries, potato chips, and strawberry cheesecake ice cream. They’re my diet kryptonite!

KC: ::whimpers:: Carb addict right here.

2. I’m totally addicted to TV. Some of my favorite shows right now are Chuck, Gossip Girl, How I Met Your Mother, and Burn Notice.

KC: I love me some Jason Segel, I watch How I met Your Mother just so I can stare at him ;)

1. Getting en e-mail from someone who’s read and enjoyed one of my books really does make my day. I save all the positive e-mails/letters that I get. ;-)

KC: Thanks, Jennifer Estep for dropping by, answering my questions, and bringing goodies!

Giveaway Open to US Residents Only Ends Wednesday, June 23.

  2. Cool. I’m glad that you enjoyed Spider’s Bite and hope that you like Web of Lies even more. ;-)

  3. Bethany C.

I’m the same way with books- I’m a total dork for magic and dragons, but sci-fi holds no appeal. And I heart Chuck. I’ve been meaning to get around to this series since it came out. I take it there are no alien invasions or ray guns.

  4. Not entering cuz no US but just wanted to say I love this post.

KC: I do that with BFs ring too. LOL But he always answers in ELvish and that is kind of scary. Should have foreseen that before giving him the Elvish dictionary. LOL

Jennifer: scifi has something for every girl. ;)

  5. I think that you and I Jennifer would get along very well. I too read for pleasure! My sister was into this list of classic books that she hadn’t ever read, and she would bring home books 5 inches thick that would take her two months to read and I just want to escape, not struggle through something just to say I read it! Reading is good lol, and your books are too!

  6. Bethany — Nope, no aliens or ray guns. Just a kick-butt assassin with some magic and some very, very sharp knives. LOL.

Susi — Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it. I do like some scifi, like the original Star Wars trilogy. And I thought the newest Star Trek movie was awesome, even though I’m not a Trekkie.

KC — Princess Bride is infinitely quotable. I often use “Inconcievable!” myself. And thanks for having me on the blog. I appreciate it!

  7. Angie — Thanks for the nice words about my books. I appreciate them. ;-)

Yeah, after slogging through stuff like Look Homeward Angel and Ulysses in college, I tend to stay away from literary fiction. Shudders.

  8. *waves frantically* I lurv to make desserts too, last week I made crème brûlée as dessert for hubby…he can actually eat it and not have it go straight to his a$$. So jealous of that! I also bake a lot from apple-pie to cheesecake to strudel, loving it all…only I can’t eat it as much. The one thing that really is my kryptonite is chocolate and Italian ice-cream, we have the Netherlands best Italian ice-cream shop 2 towns away *cries* and I can’t go to it evah…or else I would have a sugar coma!

Okay….is it evident I’m on a diet? *looks around*

That’s one of the things I like so much about Gin, she’s all kick-ass but knows how to whip up a sinful dessert that has my mouth watering LOL

  9. I’m not entering the contest, but I wanted to say thatI love this series! I just finished Web of Lies-so many questions!! Gin is one of my favorite heroines. I so can’t wait to read Venom. I really want to make apricot bars after reading the book. I think there needs to be a recipe index at the back of Venom!

  10. Leontine — *Waves back* Mmm. Strudel. You’re making me hungry. ;-)

I know what you mean. I got tired of reading about all the heroines who can kick butt but have no idea how to cook or never have any food in their fridge. It’s hard to be tough on an empty stomach. LOL.

Colette — Thanks! I’m glad that you enjoyed the book. Actually, some of the recipes in the books are on my website. Here’s the link: http://www.jenniferestep.com/books-series/elemental-assassin-series/. The Golden Raisin Bars are actually the apricot bars. They’re sooo good — like little bites of sunshine in your mouth.

  11. I love that you put generic statements in your 1st draft! That cracks me up. I have been known to write things like that…[insert scene here: H/h fight in library. She storms out.] LOL!

  12. Amy T.

Your random hates are the same as mine with the exception of yellow. I can handle yellow in small increments! :) Great interview! I have Spider’s Bite on my shelf to read and will have to move it up the list! Thanks for the giveaway!

    @amyt865

  13. @Susi I just can’t seem to help myself ;)

@Leontine you are so coming over to my house so I can have crème brûlée….please *puppy dog eyes*

  14. Dyromance — Oh, yeah, I do that all the time. “And then they have sex” is another common one that I’ll use. LOL.

Amy — Thanks! I hope you enjoy Spider’s Bite. Just about the only thing yellow that I like are flowers like daisies and daffodils. LOL.

  15. CrystalGB

    I love a good action/adventure/spy/swashbuckling movies too. I love Spider’s Bite. Gin is a great heroine. :)

  16. Barbara Elness

I loved the 10 Things post – and I’m happy to report that we have the same taste in television and movies Jennifer! ( At least from the titles you listed.) Yellow is also my least favorite color – several rooms were immediately painted when I moved into my house because they were yellow. The outside is yellow as well – still saving to do that over.
I loved Spider’s Bite, Gin was such a wonderful character, and I’m really looking forward to reading Web of Lies.

  17. Crystal — Thanks! I’m glad that you like Gin.

Barbara — Yellow rooms? Ugh. That makes me shudder just reading about it. LOL. Cool. I hope you enjoy Web of Lies even more!

  18. Hmmph, I feel discriminated here, as a Dutch girl! ;)
Loved the Top Ten Stuff and you made me curious about this series. I don’t know where people find the time to watch TV, to be honest. When do they read then? :)

  19. @Janna I’ll hold an ebook contest for my far away friends ;) I usually leave the TV glaring in the background while reading. And, I always make time for Trublood ;)

  20. I think I need to get Trueblood on DVD, because everyone is talking about it! And that Joe Manganiello guy is seducing me to watch too ;)

  21. @Janna you have to watch Trublood so you can drool over Alexander Skarsgard. Worth. It.

  22. Wonderful post! (Don’t enter me, I’ve read this great book)

I just wanted to stop by and tell Jennifer to look around this blog, you’ll love it. Especially the waxing post. ;) Read the comments too. Just make sure you’ve gone pee before reading it. :D

    Btw… GO Burn Notice! Woo!

  23. @Melissa (Books and Things) This blog will forever be known as the ‘waxing post’ and Am I too Vanilla for BDSM O_o

I haven’t seen Burn Notice….I keep watching reruns of Trublood.

  24. CASINO ROYALE is my all time FAVORITE Bond movie! The new one though, with Daniel Craig who consequently is the BEST Bond ever!!! When he walks out of the ocean with those tight blue skivvies *Sigh* I pause and just stare. When my husband isn’t watching it with me of course. If he knew my Daniel Craig crush, I’d never hear the end of it!

Another action movie fave of mine is IRON MAN. I’ve watched it a million times – I can even quote it. Its just one of those movies that never gets old.

    :) VFG

  25. @VFG Daniel Craig makes my heart go pitty pat. Those blue eyes *shiver* waaaaaaaaay better than Pierce Brosnan (sp?)

  26. Janna — Don’t feel bad. I haven’t seen True Blood either. No HBO for me — it just costs too darn much.

Melissa — Now you’ve got me curious. I’ll check it out.

KC — You have got to start watching Burn Notice. It’s awesome, especially Bruce Campbell.

VFG — Casino Royale is my fav Bond movie too. And I know exactly which scene you are talking about. ;-)

I just watched Iron Man for the first time the other day. I liked it a lot. I thought Robert Downey Jr. was really good in it.

  27. KC — I don’t know. I liked Brosnan a lot too, especially in Goldeneye. That’s the best Bond movie that he did.

  28. @Jennifer Estep Gasp, Bruce Campbell is in Burn Notice???? I have been in love with him ever since Army of Darkness!

Pierce Brosnan does this weird funky purse with his lips, drives me crazy. Daniel Craig = verra niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice

  29. @Jennifer-Thank you! I am going to take a look at the recipes now! :)

  30. Dawn Roberto

I LOVED Princess Bride. I think that was the first movie I saw with Mandy Patikin (sp?) and even today, I watch Criminal Minds or anything else he is on. :)

Got Spider’s Bite on my bedside table ready for me to read next. Looking forward to it.

Love the fantasy authors you mentioned. Have you read Gail Z. Martin? Awesome Necromancer series with magic, demons, good vs evil. On pins and needles for her next book…..in 2011. *wails*

    Dawn R.

  31. I would be afraid that the general comments would make it into the final book do to me forgetting to put stuff there..it would end up having many pages saying *and the sexin’ happens here* ;) I am a big fan of how I met your mother too – unfortunately people don’t watch it at my work so when I say let’s suit up everyone thinks I’m crazy :P – great list and interview!

  32. @Dawn For the longest time I honestly thought Mandy Patikin had that accent. Hand to God.

@Heather you and I would have multiple chapters devoted to sexy time in our books, maybe this is why we are bloggers instead of writers…? :)

  33. I totally agree on SciFi books. I just can’t get into them now, although I love, love, love UF. When I was a teenager (many moons ago), SciFi was all I read, but I guess I burned out forever because nowadays it doesn’t interest me at all. Even funnier though is that I do still love SciFi movies. Go figure.

I just picked up Spider’s Bite. I’m so excited to start it.

  34. Jenna Wood

I love cooking too! Especially baking cakes and fun cupcakes! I like to try new recipes and create my own!
    six_one_nine_girlie86 (at) yahoo (dot) com

  35. Potato chips!! Totally. :D

  36. KC — Oh, yes. He plays a boozy ex-Navy Seal who wears really loud tropical shirts.

I like Brosnan, but Craig really has that sexy toughness going on that is the key to a great Bond.

Colette — You’re welcome. Happy baking!

Dawn — I hope you enjoy the book. I haven’t heard of Martin. I’ll have to check her out. Thanks for the recommendation!

Heather — That hasn’t happened yet, thank goodness. Don’t you love it when Barney goes all … wait for it … legendary? ;-)

JenM — I’ve never been much for scifi, even as a kid. Cool. I hope you enjoy the book.

Jenna — I love to bake too, although I think cookies are my favorite thing to make.

    Wendy — Agreed! ;-)

  37. These are all very nice random things. I watch every show you listed except Gossip Girl. I must look into that one now.

  38. I love THE PRINCESS BRIDE, too. While I enjoy the fantasy shows, I, also, love the ones about space. Willow is another good one.

  39. @Marlene Breakfield *big girl gasp* I love Willow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  40. LOVE this series! Also love Princess Bride and Burn Notice – but raisins make the top of my most hated list…

  41. Janicu — Gossip Girl is about rich kids doing outrageous things — perfect guilty fun. Especially Ed Westwick as Chuck Bass. Such a great character.

Marlene — I really liked Val Kilmer in Willow.

Dee — Thanks! Good to know you are enjoying the books.

  42. Julie Swaney

    Hi Jennifer,
I LOVED Spiders’ Bite and can’t wait to get my hands on Web of Lies. This series is
    great.

Chocolate is my diet kryptonite! I can’t seem to go a day without some.

    Julie Swaney

  43. Sandy Jay

OMG! I love peas, coconut, and licorice. I can love or hate the color yellow depending on what shade it is. I like that you use generic lines in your rough drafts. I do that sometimes in my letters to my sister when I have a long drawn out story to tell her but I want to get something else written before I forget it. Then I just have to remember to go back and tell her what stuff actually happened! I haven’t used the “something blows up” line yet, although, that might be a line she could use. Talk about the drama in that girls life…..

  44. I have the HUGEST crush on Jason Segel :)

  45. Strawberry cheesecake ice cream. I haven’t thought of that in a long time. We used to have a little shop that made it from scratch here. It was so good.
I really like burn notice, did you catch jeffery donovan on the view yesterday? He is really funny.
    debbie
    twoofakind12@yahoo.com

  46. Julie — Thanks! I’m glad that you are enjoying the series. I’m right there with you on the chocolate. Another one of my fav things are those dark chocolate Godiva bars with raspberry filling. So yummy!

Sandy Jay — Yeah, sometimes I go back and can’t remember exactly what kind of “stuff” I need to explain. LOL.

    Raelena — Me too.

Deb — Eddy’s makes an excellent strawberry cheesecake ice cream — and it’s low-fat to boot! Ah, I wish I would have known. I would have watched JD on The View.

  47. Lethea Benson

I can so relate to the enjoyment of going to book stores! I wonder if they pump in concentrated smells that lure in people who love to read, you know that very powerful new book smell x a million?! =)
