Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels Series– The Lion, The Witch (Insert B), & The Thong Chandelier

Here I go again. I remember vividly expressing that I DO NOT DO continuation series. Sure, I’ve read many authors that have a series where each book is an exploration of two different characters. But yet again, I’m going to have to pin my H for hypocrite on my chest because I’ve been converted. See, the thing is, I can’t read this series because I become so obsessed with finding out the next installment that I’d do anything to get my hands on the next book. And I mean anything! So, for the sake of my marriage and my own personal morality I usually say no, and ‘turn away’. Temptation and the raving reviews from my blogger friends made me say the heck with my rules and picked up husband and wife author team, otherwise known as Ilona Andrews for the first book, Magic Bites.
Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series aka dubbed the Magic series (btw I’m notorious for ne-naming series to what I think they should be called) is both a little bit country and a little bit rock’ n’ roll. And by that I mean it borders on paranormal urban fantasy with the promise of a romance in the later books. The setting for this book takes place in a futuristic Atlanta where both magic and technology are in a constant flux leaving everyone vulnerable to the their changes. This series has a little something for everyone, action, adventure, shapeshifters, necromancers, Viking Gods and more!
What really stood out for me with this series is that fact that Kate Daniels is not your typical rough’n tough female mercenary. I’ve noticed that while trying to create a strong, female lead authors tend to have their heroines go from butch to bitch with little or no middle ground. I enjoy when an author creates an independent, strong, female lead that is a bit more three-dimensional, flaws included. Some readers felt that Kate was lacking in compassion and humanity but I disagree. Kate has been trained since birth to become the ultimate assassin in hopes of one day taking on her most powerful enemy to date…her father! So of course she is going to be a bit rough around the edges peoples! She kills people for a living…hello, that means she might have a little growing to do in the love, care and share department.
Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up magical problems. But when Kate’s guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta’s magic circles.
What I most enjoyed about this series is the excellent tension between Kate and the leader of the Atlanta Pack Curran. Curran is the lion King….and I mean that literally. He can shapeshift into a giant, eight-foot tall lion and he is King, responsible for over 500 shapeshifters. He is ruthless and rules with an iron fist. Some of the best scenes in the series involve their tete-a-tetes. My favorite has to be when Kate comes home after a long day alone, and exhausted, when she suddenly smells coffee. Out walks Curran. Sputtering and incensed, Kate doesn’t know what the heck he is up to. After he leans in close for what she thinks will be a kiss. He then utters “Psyche” and leaves. I giggled like a 15 year old.
Final thoughts: Like baked lays you can’t read just one. You pretty much have to read ‘em all.

Yay! I’m so glad you liked this series. I love it with unholy love and witnessed by my shrine to Ilona. Yes, I’m sick. No, I don’t want help.
I’m waiting with bated breath for the fourth book. I heard that this one is supposed to be where Kate looses everything. Noooooooooooooooo! Curran is now one of my fantasy boyfriends.
@Van P I think Magic series sounds cooler, right? I also do this with Chritine Feehan’s Game series…it’s been so long I can’t even remember the “official name”.
@EH have you read this series yet? Not a whole lot of horizontal mambo going on, but still the tension sizzles!
@Patti Curran can growl at me any day
@Mandi I want, no I need to read the 4th book!!!! I wants it now!!! Thong chandelier had me giggling for 30 seconds.
@Queen B I blame you for my new Ilona Andrew’s addiction, hubs get’s no attention at all when I’m reading an Andrew’s book.
As some may have noticed I’m a Ilona Andrews pimp and so agree with you. I adore this series and can’t wait to read Magic Bleeds. Have you seen the wonderful cover?
And don’t get me started on Curran. Love him!
And that’s a series I forced BF to read and he loved it too.
Great review!
P.S. I always rename the series too and then I forget the real one. LOL
Le *sigh* I’m going to have to move these up the TBR mountain. Especially since you and I have such similar taste. I don’t need anymore book obsessions! I’m trying desperately to savor the last two Shelly Laurenston books I haven’t read. I hate having to wait. I’m definitely in the instant gratification camp. I loved On the Edge and I’m eager for the next in that series. I keep hearing about Curran and I just know that I’ll be burning through these soon enough. I have all three, so I may as well get to reading. Thanks a lot! Pusher
Wooh hoo! You haz been converted.
I can’t say enough good things about the series. Everyone should read this series. Everyone!
Who? Moi? Just because I hounded you for days doesn’t mean anything. I take no responsibility for your addiction…. ::nose in the air::
So you’ve finally met the famous Curran
He is on my date card for 2010. I’ve only read Silent Blade by this author but the promise it contained *drool* Note to self: More reading, less virtual world exploring!
have you read on the edge k.c? it’s just as good as the magic series
…i like both this name and your renaming. (btw, i never knew it was called the magic series haha)
I have this series and I really REALLY need to get started on it. I’ve also read tons of goodness about Ilona Andrews THE EDGE but I think I’m going to read what I already have first.
Thanks for the great review, girl! I’ll try and read the series soon so we can talk about this luscious Curran you described. Purrrrrrr.
Hugs, VFG
@Susi I call Karen Marie Mongins series “The Fae series” Tell me your secret, how did you get BF to read this book?!
@Fallon {screams} I lurve Shelly Laurenston!!!! Curran=le hot you must read about him. Caution once you start with Magic Burns you’ll want to read the rest all in one night.
@Lou Yes I’m no longer an Ilona Andrews virgin. Do I get a sticker or something?
@Queen B you totally peer pressured me like high school.
@Leontine OMG you’ll love Curran- this series is just so you. Only minor drawback there is no, well, you know *whispers* s-e-x.
@Van P Yes, I read On the Edge before I read “The Magic Series ” *giggle* I liked it, but I love Kate and Curran more.
@VFG I wait with baited breath until you read this series so we can chat about it all day. I pencil it in on my outlook calendar *(writes) will giggle with VFG about Curran and Kate.*
@k.c, Yes, i agree i love them too, oh about the no sex…i actually like that about this book….it’s like teasing the readers haha.
@Van P It’s like Ilona knows that we want to read about hot steamy sex with Curran and Kate, but like a good girl on a first date, she teases us, leaving me wanting more.
@K.C, Definitely hahaha. I got my younger sister hooked on the book….throughout reading book1-3 she’s like when are they going to do it damnit!
This sounds like a fab series! I haven’t read anything by this author before so I might as well start with this one. Thanks SHB – I’m off to add to my wishlsit! Oh and great review btw

I’m going to go pick up Magic Bites today from the library! I’ve heard so many great things about this series. Can’t wait to read them!
@Caitlin the first book is a little slow, not bad, but worth it to read about Curran and Kate. I loved Magic Strikes the best.
I’ve got to read the Magic series one day!! Everyone says wonderful things about it…and now you have fallen into the fold. I guess I won’t be too far behind.
Another wonderful review!
