Steal souls. Live in hell. Never die.

In a city infested with psychotic fairies and run by sadistic vampire mafiosi, life as a soul-sucking succubus rarely involves lacy lingerie, hot guys or great sex.

Enslaved by a demon lord, Jade must spend her nights seducing vampire gangsters and shapeshifting thugs. After two hundred years as a succubus, she burns for freedom and longs to escape her brutal life as a trophy girl for hell’s minions.

Then, she meets Rajah, an incubus who touches her heart and intoxicates her senses. Rajah shares the same bleak fate as she, and yearns just as desperately for freedom. But the only way for Jade to break her bonds is to betray Rajah—and doom the only man she’s ever loved to a lifetime in hell.

K.C. Joining us today is new {ish} Urban Fantasy Author Erica Hayes!!!! She has also generously offered to giveaway Shadowfae to one lucky SOB!!!!

shadowglassEH Thanks so much for having me, K.C.. It’s a real buzz!

K.C. {Swivels chair to Ms. Hayes}

Tell us how the idea for this series began? It’s not everyday one reads about psychotic faeries, succubi and sadistic vampires Mafiosi. Why, last year it was death by sex fae!

shadowglassEH: Oh gosh, those death-by-sex fae… Hmm. Right. Back on topic… Well, I knew I wanted to write about a succubus. A girl who can suck out men’s souls? Cool!  And I knew she wasn’t a demon, but a mortal woman in thrall to a demon lord. And then I got thinking about what the demon lord might use her for, and who his other minions were, and who his enemies would be. And so my demon-haunted, vampire-controlled, fairy-infested gangland was born :) Essentially, my heroine, Jade, is an assassin — she steals men’s souls and sends them to hell for her demon. Quite an unpleasant job, and in many ways the Shadowfae’s  world is unpleasant too — it’s dark and violent, and everyone’s out to get you. But it’s also colorful, and sensuous, and very beautiful.

K.C. I’ll think I’ll contact Mike Rowe. He’s looking for a dirty job. How are the vamps different in your series *cough* they,… uh, don’t sparkle right?

shadowglassEH: Ha! Umm… No. No sparkling. No angsty vegans. No wussiness, I promise. In fact most of my vamps are evil, or at least amoral. They eat people, and they like it!

K.C.  Finally, vamps that aren’t afraid to show their fangs!

shadowglassEH: In the Shadowfae world, vampirism is a virus, and if it doesn’t bring you to a sticky end right away, it tends to drive you a bit insane, as well as making you stronger, faster, smarter and very hard to kill. Vampires are stronger and more powerful than pretty much everyone else, and that puts them at the top of the food chain — especially in gangland, where everyone is fair game and no one else really cares if you live or die. In this book, both my rival ganglords are vampires. One is cold and calculating. The other… well, let’s just say he doesn’t think with his big brain :)

K.C. {Winks at Ms. Hayes}  Gotcha.  Tell us about Jade in 140 characters or less. As you can tell I’m a mite obsessed with Twitter.

shadowglassEH In thrall to her demon lord for a thousand years for one bad mistake. Emotionally starved. Sick of meaningless sex. Longing for a way out.

K.C. You can level with me, at the end of Shadowfae will Rajah be my next book boyfriend?

shadowglassEH:  I hope so! He’s kinda hot, if I may say so myself. But you might have to fight for him. Jade can be very determined :)

K.C. I sometimes arm wrestle on the weekends…I can take Jade.

shadowglassE H: I think Rajah’s maybe a slightly unconventional hero. I mean, this is urban fantasy, so there’s latitude for less-then-perfectly-behaved heroes, and initially Rajah has the moral standards you’d expect from a guy whose job it is to seduce women to their deaths — but once he decides whom he wants, no other woman will do. He’s confident in his sexuality and his, umm, bedroom talents – he’s had 400 years to get confident! And of course being an incubus helps, because he can use his demonic magic to seduce almost anyone he chooses.

But in some ways Rajah’s also very vulnerable. His relationship with his demon lord wavers between passion and hatred. His conscience still trips him up when he least expects it. And he’s not used to dealing with emotional involvement, so his empathy for Jade’s plight really knocks him flat.

Or you never know — you might choose my demon lord, Kane, instead. Lots of readers seem to like Kane. He’s very powerful — he can call down thunder or set you on fire with a glance if he feels like it — and of course it’s his job to know your deepest desires so he can lure your soul to hell. But in everyday things, like asking a girl out on a date, he’s quite clueless.

K.C.  I have a California King bed…I’ll take ‘em both!

Finally, in the spirit of Bernard Pivot and in honoring the great James Lipton, we ask these questions:

What is your favorite word? ’Lascivious’. Or maybe ‘eldritch’. Than again, if you asked my copy editor, she’d say it was ‘shiny’. I’m always getting pinged for too many ‘shiny’s :)

What is your least favorite word?Of’. I hate ‘of’. I’m forever cutting it from my manuscripts. I also really hate ‘vagina’, because it’s such a horrible, awkward, unsexy word — why can’t we have a hot word for lady-bits?

What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally? Color. Unexpected humor. Emotional and sensual honesty. I really like honest books that show things how they really are, and I’ve tried to write that way.

What turns you off?  Boredom. Too many days the same in a row, and I go nuts!

What is your favorite curse word?  Fuck a duck… {oops. Can I say that here?}

What sound or noise do you love? I love the sound of an oboe. I play, but I’m not that great.

What sound or noise do you hate? Me playing the oboe… nah. I’m not that bad :) Maybe a really loud car engine? Or a motorbike? I don’t get how engine sounds can possibly be enjoyed.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? I wanted to be an astronaut, but I’m hopeless at physics. Maybe I’ll be Doctor Who’s next companion instead.

What profession would you not like to do? I don’t wish to be a teacher. Please, save me from that fate :) I’m really impatient at explaining things.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?  ‘Love your books!’

  1. I would totally be a fairy, since you ignored my Pixie Kin! Fairies seem to draw the short end of the stick, there’s not enough written about them and when it is, it’s usually pretty blah or negative!

+3 for all of the above! LOL

  4. Just wanted to say great interview – both interviewer and interviewee!

(no need to enter me, I’ve got this one)

  5. I would be part of the vampire mafioso. It would please me to be the top of the food chain, and not beholden to a demon lord (I feel like he’s a pimp! lol. As for fairies, there are too many rules and structure, I would forget and get myself in so much trouble. I know as a vampire I would have to watch my back, but fairies can be brutal. lol.

On a side note, this was a great interview, and that blurb is killer. Talk about piquing my interest. I totally want to read this.

  6. pixie13

I’d much rather be a Fairy. I’m ok with being psychotic, not so much with the soul-sucking & sadistic.

  7. I would be a fairy because being psychotic is sounds better than stealing people’s souls or eating them….not my cup of tea haha.

  28. I can’t believe no one wants to be a succubus, did I miss something? Who doesn’t want to have the meaningless sex all the time, right? Okay, maybe I don’t, but hey we’re talking about a fantasy world and can’t a girl have that in her fantasies?? ;)
Btw this fantasy world is blowing my mind to be honest…

I just became a follower (had no idea I wasn’t already) and we’re twitter friends too. Gonna retweet in a sec…

  29. (commenting again) Just read the last comment from ErotRomReader (Janna) That is indeed a nice case.. I would not mind being a succubus either as long as I enjoy it… The bad thing is that the Demon Lord will use you and… *shudders just imagining the gross creatures I would have to please*

It would be awesome as long as I get to pick them ;-)

Hehe… Just had to say that… It is not as if it is you fault to suck souls, it is their ‘nature’ just as vampires suck blood -same thing- ^.^

  30. @Janna &AleBB I chose a Succubus too…scrll back and read -> Quoting myself: I would go for a Succubus cause as it turns out I’m a fun submissive (really I got tested!)

  31. @Leontine
HAHA! I did not choose succubus though, I picked either: a.Fairy or (my fave which I made up) d.Demon Lord :-P hehe But being a succubus is quite tempting I must add *wink*

  32. @Leontine & AleBB: O God, I should have seen AND known that you choose a succubus too, Leontine!! After all we’re kindred spirits, aren’t we?! Or to put it bolder: sisters in smut! :D
I’ve heard about the test, so you tested fun submissive, huh!? I wonder what I would’ve tested *grin*

  33. @Donna LOL “naturally bossy”!!!

    @Dottie :)

@Janna I’m not surprised you choose succubus *wink*

@Leontine I’m still not over that I am “vanilla” submissive!

  34. Brenda B.

I would have to be a fairy. Just the word brings to mind “Tinker Bell”. She was a great fairy in Peter Pan. I am just a kid at heart and can’t picture me as anything evil or bad. I want to fly around and sprinkle Fairy Dust. LOL..Loved the interview, both of you are very funny. Love to laugh and you made me laugh, alot. LOL. Succubus sounds sexy but to steal mens souls..NO WAY.. Count not do that.,Great giveaway, thanks.,

    I am a google friend

  35. @Brenda B Tinker Bell is da bomb. I have no kidlets yet I own the new Tinkle Bell movie O_o

  36. I would be a fairy. As a kid I just loved Tinkerbell. As an adult, I would love to be a different kind of fairy…more grown up and a little bid bad.
