Smexybooks Lays the Smackdown & Challenges Me To A ‘Read Off”…Let’s Get Ready to Rummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmble! wrestling

I mean whoa! Me, a dyed in the wool, happily ever after fanatic was expected to read a science fiction/fantasy book that had no guarantee of an aforementioned happy ending. Sayyyyyyyy what!! Oh no she didn’t! So, like any other person who has been triple dogged dared, I hiked up my big girl panties, cracked my neck and said…. ‘you want some of this? Come get sum!!’

Well, that might have been a slight exaggeration of my over-stimulated imagination. Hubs has been on a strict diet of testosterone, so nothing but Rambo, Deadliest Catch and Call of Duty for me this past weekend.  But I digress.  To make things a little more interesting I challenged Smexybooks, aka Mandi to read a vintage contemporary romance, circa 1990 by the fabulous Linda Howard. Her mission, if she chooses to accept, is to find and locate, Dream Man; read it, love it and then tell us all about it! Should she choose not to accept we’ll make her internet connection self-destruct in t-minus, ten, nine, eight.- well, you get the idea. Don’t make me dust off Uncle Larry’s brass knuckles, (fondly referred to as “The Punisher”) to bring to this smackfest. I may have grown up in the land of palm trees, Botox and fake bazungas, but when push comes to shove; I can bring it better than a Real Housewife of New Jersey!

My Adventures in Grimspace

grimspaceSirantha Jax is a jumper, born with a rare gene that allows her to access GRIMSPACE and therefore speed up space travel and jump ships.  We first meet Jax trapped in a psych unit cell, accused of killing her last crew on her assignment.  Including her pilot, lover and friend Kai.  Pilots and jumpers share a unique and intimate bond.  She can’t fathom how she would have caused the death of her last ship; she has only flashes of memory.  March enters her cell and offers a deal she can’t refuse. Everyone knows a jumper never lasts long; will this be her last jump? {This book was purchased by me}

This book rocked my inner sci-fi, geek world! Tolkien who?!  This book was an adventure into the world of Grimspace and I didn’t want to come back.  Each sentence was well thought out and gripping, drawing me deeper into Ann Aguirre’s intergalactic universe.

What really stood out for me was the ability of Ann Aguirre to maintain such a thrilling intensity. I felt so much apart of the action that I had to stop and ‘take a knee’ in order to pace myself lest my heart give out before the end. It’s been some time since I’ve just read a book that was fun, no, scratch that, exhilarating! It’s not often that as a reader I feel so connected to the physicality of the action in a book. I felt that I had hopped a ride on Jax’s ship and was a part of the team.  If there is one author who makes you want to name your first-born Jax, or call out March in the heat of the moment, it’s Ann Aguirre.

I have to thank Mandi, without her challenging me to read such genres as sci-fiction/fantasy, male vs. male, and many more authors, I’d be one deprived little puppy.   She inspires me to read outside of my sheltered comfort zone and I’d follow her down any reading path she leads me!

Your Smexy- Hot Book Challenge should you choose to except is to read one book from Smexybooks or Smokinhotbooks book list and tell us all about your adventure! This is your chance to jump off the deep end. (Just take a right at the sign, Next Stop Hedonism and keep on going until you hit the nude beach). Come on over, the water’s nice over here.

  2. Hey hon..

I can and I do blame Mandi for a multitude of sins when it comes to my reading habit and my spending habits…

Hubby finally gave up when Skin Game came through the door – I told him she made me do it, I did, I really did… and i am sticking with that excuse.

Now you have to find your own excuse, or else you have a whole lot of smack down to face…

I love this series, I am not a die hard sci-fi fan, but my best friend is and in order to maintain the peace I had to read the series..

I agree Aquirre world rocks…. and tit only gets better and better with every book..

  4. I’ve not read much scifi, your review is wonderful but I just don’t know….is it a pretty even mix of romance and scifi?

Where is this booklist/stash you speak of?
I will even let each one of you pick a book for me to read. So I’ll read two books instead of one.

  6. Oh I forgot! Great review KC…Grimspace is on my reading list, but have some other stuff to read first so I think it’s going to be next year that I’ll get around to it, the other Jax books and Blue Diablo…

Yes, I went on an Ann Aguirre binge after reading SKIN GAME

  7. @Wendy I was sheltered before I met Mandi. If I could reach around and kick my own arse I would!!

@Erotic Horizon genius! I should totally tell hubs that Mandi makes me spend $50.00 at B & N!!

@Mandi before January 1st I’m going to tally up how much money I’ve spent because of you…I’m thinking a couple of hundred!

@Patti I know what you mean by “Sci-fi” but Grimspace has such a wonderful story, if you’ve read Ann other books you’ll like this one. The intensity of the romance is there. Come on Patti give it the ol college try :)

@Pearl After reading Aguirre’s Grimspace I went on a spending spree and bought all of her books! Just finished Blue Diablo, another great one. Dare I say, Aguirre is my new crack..?

@Marissa I see your pretty avi now :) I think you’ll like Linda Howard, in the 90’s to 2000 her books were the bomb. Now she’s changed her style a little. Has_Bookpushers agrees that she just doesn’t write the same, tis sad, but Ann is my new crack so I’m “okay”.
