Victoria Dahl & Joley Sue Burkhart: Rocked My Vanilla BDSM World!
17 Nov, 2009 in 5 Star Reviews, Erotic Romance 34 CommentsFor most of you who read our previous post on our misgivings about the genre of BDSM I have to say whoa! My petunia has seen the light and I am now a follower of all things dominant, nasty and dare I say…a spanking or two?
After reading our post, authors Victoria Dahl and Joley Sue Burkhart were kind of enough to send some of their own works that encompassed what I feel is the best of BDSM! Both of these authors found a way to incorporate what can be a very graphic sexuality and softened it into a sort of impassioned sensuality coupled with intense feelings and a gentle exploration into what can be a bit of a scary world. They have converted me to the dark side, and Obi Wan can suck it, cause I’m not ever going back to the light side of the force.
Joley Sue Burkhart’s Dear Sir I’m Yours
Joley Sue Burkhart’s Dear Sir I’m Yours was a beautifully written exploration into what I find is one of my top 10 fantasies of the sexy professor and naïve/innocent student. I literally was swept away by her prose and sexy professor Conn who takes submissive Rae on an exploration of her own wants and desires. After reading the story I found myself raiding my closet for my old Hot Topic skirts and asking my husband if I had been a bad girl lately, while perched rather uncomfortably on his desk. I believe next time I will have to plan ahead and move our bills, as I walked away with a W2 form stuck to my ass. I am ever grateful to have been introduced to the lighter, softer side of BDSM where control and trust can be shown in a fulfilling and sexy light.
Five years ago, her grandson had bent Rae over his desk the last day of finals, spanked her, and given her the best orgasm of her life.
This has to be one of the steamiest, juiciest, bit of deliciousness that I have read in a long time. I felt this story was a more accurate portrayal of what a true BDSM relationship would entail. What Dahl really showed was that at the core of any dominant/submissive relationship is trust. The trust is what makes the act of submission so deliciously erotic. The notion that you trust your partner so inexplicably, to guide your passions to the precipice and entrust that he/she won’t let you fall. My big beef with so many BDSM erotica authors has been that they relied too much upon the physical fore to be the catalyst of the trust. Dahl swept me away into the Wild West where latex and ball gags didn’t yet exist {thank god}.
Sheriff Hale and Mrs. Andersen explore their own sexual identities that release them from the bonds of shame and allow them to be true to themselves. Sheriff Hale is a man who protects the innocent, yet, struggles with his dominant sexual nature and can’t seem to turn away from the Widow Andersen. Lily embraces her submissive side as she recognizes the need in Sheriff Hale to express his dominant nature.
“Sheriff Hale.” Her voice dropped to something soft and uncertain. “What can I do for you?”
Get on your knees, his brain supplied, and Hale’s cheeks burned hotter. He didn’t like feeling embarrassed. Anger bloomed beneath his breastbone.
“I’m sorry to have to broach such an uncomfortable subject, Mrs. Anders, but you leave me no choice. You… You understand that I can see into your bedroom at night?”
————————————————————————————————————————————-
“I can be good,” she promised, twisting up all the air in his lungs. “I’m not one of those women, Sheriff. I swear. I’ve only ever… I’ve only been with Mr. Anders, you see. And he was like you. So I thought…”
Would it be too obvious to lay this book on hub’s desk with some earmarked pages and nylon rope? As they say you can lead a horse to water but that doesn’t mean that stallion is going to bend you over and make you ‘behave’.
Special Thanks to Erotic Horizon, Victoria Dahl, Joely Sue Burkhart , Mandi aka Smexybooks and my blogger friends for their helpful suggestions, and book recommendations.

What a fun review, heh. I adore Victory Dahl — just finished reader Start Me Up and Talk Me Down, review(s) pending…
and I read the Holly Summers piece too — I thought it was an interesting twist that the two characters were so isolated. In the age of the internet where everyone can become an expert in any kind of bizarre fetish in about 15 minutes of googling, it was really interesting to read about two characters who had no resources to inform them other than their own desires and imaginations. It makes their romance, their discovery of each other, practically miraculous.
Both books sound hot, but I really must buy Holly Summers book now
Good luck leaving hints around, hehe
@Nicola O after Wicked West I found myself at Amazon adding all of Dahl’s books into my shopping cart.
@Ali I dare say if I had a post-it note on my head hubs probably still wouldn’t “get it”
I recently read both of Victoria Dahl’s books, I didn’t realize she had one written as Holly Summers but I am all over that now.
Ms. Burkhart’s book sounds good as well, although she’s new to me.
LOL – I hope your husband is ready to take the place of these fictional men
I haven’t read either of these authors..sigh. But both of the books sound really good!
The W-2 joke had me snorting coffee this morning! Thank you so much – I’m glad Conn was able to bring you over to the Dark Side!
Ooops, sorry, that was me above.
Ah…welcome KC. So glad to have you here in the world of BDSM converts.
I’ve never read these authors but with my recent interest in sensual BDSM, I’m certainly going to give them a try. *wink*
@Patti Both of these authors made my nights a warmer place.
@Mandi You have to add these authors to your TBR pile or I’ll spank you. I kid *wink* sorry too much BDSM on the brain.
@Joely Sue Burkhart Conn can come over and play with me any day. Thanks for stopping by.
@FV I think I need a coming out party what do you think?
KC, I’m totally digging the coming out party. We could tie you up and take pics for your blog and everything!
I haven’t yet read the Victoria Dahl book yet but think I should.
I can’t wait to see what you try next.

~ OMG! You’re hilarious! I think you better club him over the head and make him read those ear marked pages *winks* Fun article! ;D
See, it’s not so scary on the dark side. We offer chocolate with our handcuffs
Oh and drop the hint with hubs. My husband and I opened the door to the kinky closet after I read him a scene from a BDSM book. So you never know.
I have been dying to read Wicked West. Darn you book pimps! My TBR pile hates you. Looks like I’m going to have to buy it now.
@FV as long as you don’t facebook tag me we’re good on the photos. Although this might ruin my changes for running for the Senate.
@Eliza I think you’d really like Wicked West or Dear Sir I’m Yours
There I go, no peer pressure or anything *wink*
@Joanna D’Angelo I fear if I club him over the head – I might render him unconscious & then I’ll never get spanked!
@Fallon I made hubs take Fiction Vixen’s fun What BDSM quiz. He got Fun Dom. Perhaps I should start emailing him excerpts from my erotic books, hmmmm?
such fun reviews, especially with your personal commentary
im also very new to this sub-genre (no pun intended with the “sub”!) and am nervous about picking up a bad BDSM book, I feel like a bad one of these would scare me more than other types of romances. I also read and really liked Dear Sir, I’m Yours, and I would also recommend some of Emma Holly’s.
If no one has already mentioned it, Sarah Frantz at Dear Author has also written some good posts on what to what out for in these type of books too.
@Lusty Reader *hug* I had a horrible bad BDSM book “experience” – I won’t even mention the title b/c I’ll probably start sucking my thumb. Thanks for the great book recs. I’ve been informed by trusted book blogges that Lauren Dane is a great author to try as well.
Dude, I am totally going to the links to order these books. And I don’t even like BDSM books. Thanks for the great reviews…I laughed out loud!
Bad BDSM stories are the pits, but there are so many good, incredible ones out there that it’s amazing. I am definitely putting these authors on my TBR list, thanks for the head’s up!!
@Penelope you just made me preen, now I’ll get a big head
@Jennifer August I’ve seen the BDSM light *raises hands* thanks for stopping by
OMG K.C.!! A W2 stuck to your butt?! LMFAO!!! You really need to warn a girl of talk like that. Everyone at the office thought I was choking.
I haven’t read either of these authors but I do have two of Dahl’s contemps in my TBR from blogger contest wins. I had no idea she wrote BDSM and I feel that I’m now more inclined to pick up her books knowing she can deliver some hussy approved reading material.
Thanks for the awesome reviews, K.C.!
Hugs, VFG
BTW, welcome to the dark side girl! We’re happy to have as a new member of our naughty forces.
@VampFanGirl If I could have twit pic myself I would have. I’m trying to be a naughty girl but its just not working out for me {sigh}. You are so going to love Dahl’s Wicked West right up your alley and Dir Sir I’m yours seriously makes me want to find one of my old college professor’s and ask if they could spank me
Oh I don’t know K.C.. Sounds like your dominatrix/naughty school girl moves worked on your hubby just fine minus the W2 incident.
Naughty behavior doesn’t necessarily equal whips and ball gags. In fact, I’ve never read a BDSM novel that included a ball gag. Yuck! So I wouldn’t worry yourself too much about your naughty rank. You’re definitely naughty enough for the dark side.
@VFG this is why I like you *hug*
I’m so proud hon! See it’s not that bad. I so loved Dear Sir, I’m your’s and can’t wait to get Victor’s story. Haven’t read the other one.
And I so hope Obi Wan wouldn’t mind that. Perhaps I should stop thinking about Ewan McGregor now….I can’t. *sigh*
K.C….
I am so glad to be listed as one of those people that enabled you to find your less than submissive side…. becasue you are no submissive….
As for hubby – please don’t traumatize him…
I have two of Dahl’s book “Start Me Up and Talk Me Down” – but not gotten to the yet… this looks like the time..
I must check out the other author…
Fun post K.C. – Just right with my morning cup of tea…
E.H>
@SusiSunshine whenever I stop by your place you always have the cutest Star Wars toys
P.S. Why would anyone want to STOP thinking about Ewan McGregor he’s hot!
@EH I’ve heard great things about Dahl’s historicals so I’ve been waiting to spend my hard earned mulah on Dahl’s other books.
OK, I’d like to try it, too. I’m going to take your advice & try the two books you mentioned. I came out a Vanilla of some sort in that quiz both times I took it, and even though I’m not ashamed of being vanilla maybe I need to broaden my horizons. So, just to be clear there are no ball gags or hot drippy candle wax or asphyxiation scenarios, right? Nothing that will scar my little vanilla soul instead of awakening it?
@Krystean hon I’m right there with you, hot wax could be sexy but ball gags or choking *shakes head* hell no! Both of these books were very sensuous BDSM – perfect for us vanilla types { can I get a hi-five}
High fivin’ you back, K.C.! But I don’t have a husband to spank me, does this mean I’m going to have to start spanking myself?? Now that would be a twitpic! LOL!
@Krystean I believe you could definitively use this as a pick up line – men would be lining up to meet your “Spankin” needs
I liked Dear Sir I am Yours very much, the Dahl I have not read but it sounds interesting!
I am putting these on my list! Book blogs are dangerous for the budget.
I gave you some awards on my blog this morning
