I was hesitant to pick up this series from Sherrilyn Kenyon, as it was a re-release from before she became a popular author. I’ve been tricked into purchasing what I assumed was a new book from an author, only to find out the only thing new about it was it’s cover. (Tricksy authors). I was so glad that I took a chance on this series! Her Dark Hunter series is one of my favorites and this promises to be even better becasue it’s sci-fi!
“Command assassin Nykyrian Quiakides once turned his back on the League-and has been hunted by them ever since. Though many have tried, none can kill him or stop him from completing his current mission: to protect Kiara Zamir, a woman whose father’s political alliance has made her a target. As her world become deadlier, Kiara must entrust her life to the same kind of beast who once killed her mother and left her for dead. Old enemies and new endanger them both and the only way they can survive is to overcome their suspicions and learn to trust in the very ones who threaten them the most: each other.”
My Thoughts
I was absolutely captivated by this new world of the League Assassins. Kenyon combined the aspects of futuristic fantasy as well as her ability to create interesting characters with very human flaws. I felt Nykyrian’s background mirrored many of her Dark Hunter heroes, where often they have been wronged or tortured throughout their lives. My only teeny tiny beef was Kiara -I liked her, and then I didn’t like her; very reminiscent of my own high school relationships. Kiara’s reactions to some of Nykyrian’s emotionally scarring secrets were off putting. Her mother died at the hands of an assassin. That somehow translates to her despising Nemiss aka Nykyrian, even though he is no longer a league assassin and does rescue reconnaissance missions. I found myself thinking, maybe even letting out a sarcastic snort, on how ridiculous she was being. I mean, he saves her and all she can focus on are her own past issues and fear of assassins. Come on! When I read about fantasy, I do not want to read about wimpy, whinny females, unless done really, really, really, well.( notice the emphasis on the really’s). Other than those little character flaws, I really liked Kenyon’s portrayal of Nykyrian and this newish sci-fi romance. You will not be disappointed!
He knew exactly what this was.
A severe panic attack.
”Princess?”
She glanced at him, shook her head and clutched even tighter at herself. “Please, leave me alone. I can’t breathe.”
His heart went out to her and her fear. He closed the distance between them and placed his hands on her arms to help steady her. “Kiara? Hauk wears women’s underware”.
Kiara froze at his words, not quite sure she had heard what he said. “Come again?”
”Hauk wears women’s underware. Pink and really girly. You know, one of those skimpy things that tucks into the crack of his fat ass.”
In spite of her terror, she laughed at the image of the huge fierce Andarion in a tiny pink G-string. “Hauk wears women’s underwear?”
P.S. Did anyone else feel the Star War’s vibe?? This could have been Hans Solo and Princess Leia’s story, that totally rocks my trekkie world in a positive way. Or should I say wookie world? Just what is the correct term for a star wars fan anyway?
Can someone please tell my hubbie that his life-sized C3PO is NOT going in our bedroom!
PPS: Born of Fire(book 2) Released Nov, 3rd or Today!!!!

That excerpt made me crack up! I should definitely check out these books, sound good!
LOL, the expert is really good and the book sounds great too. Have to get it! As to the Star Wars question I’m not really sure. Warsi? Just googled it and they say Jedi! So I’m a Jedi too. How cool is that! And I want a life sized R2D2, C3PO is really too big for the bedroom.LOL
Oh my…I meant the excerpt. You have to love the typos which form a real word.LOL
I’ve been going back and forth with wondering if I should get this book. I still need to read a couple in her DH series.
That excerpt is funny though – my kind of humor.
I really was taken by surprise by this book. Loved the fact it was a “meatier” book than what I am used to from Kenyon. And of course there is the signature Kenyon humor
@Wendy I was surprised that I ended up liking this book. Can’t wait for Born of Fire
@SusiSunshine I’m the queen of typos and commas splices
@Mandi I think you would really enjoy Kenyon’s DH series especially Acheron. But I think with your book tastes, this is not an author that will make your top 10 list. You still need to read her though so we can chit chat about the books
@Leontine I was pleasantly surprised as well. This definitely had some Acheron/DH vibes for me, which I liked.
This does sound like a fun read and I love Sci Fi. I haven’t read any Sherrilyn Kenyon, maybe I should start with this.
Not sure why my avatar isn’t my new pink girlie, but ya know who it is
@Book Chick City I really love Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series this would be like my second fav. Good news, I saw a lot of stores with this book discounted…think about it
I, like you, was hesitant to pick it up since it was a re-release of some of her earlier work but I was very glad i did pick it up. I’m also a sci fi fan and loved the story, even though Kiara did get on my last good nerve a couple of times. I’m looking forward to Born of Fire next; did you see the commercial for it?? LOVE it!
@Sweetie Pie Pen Kiara will not make my Kenyon top 5 heroine list – Nykyrian hot hot hot. I haven’t seen the commerical for Born of Fire, off I go to youtube.
Love the quote! Kiara sounds a little stubborn, the wrong way.
I went ahead and bought this one but I haven’t read it yet. Hopefully, I’ll read it soon.
I didn’t even know she had this series out until I saw book 2 on FantasyDreamers new release post. Another book to add to my growing pile of want to read books. (Thanks for the heads up that this is a re-release-I’ve been fooled by that as well.)
@Donna I’m really looking forward to Born of Fire as Leontine says Syn is sexy and I’m in full agreement. You’ll really like Nykyrian.
@Collette usually I never read the afore mention, but for Kenyon’s new League series I did. She mentioned she did some heavy re-writing so wasn’t like a re-release with a new cover. I can’t tell you how many times Christine Feehan has done this and like a fool end up buying the same book.
Whew! Someone likes this series!!
Like you K.C., I was totally tricked into buying this series thinking it was something new only to discover that it’s something old and repackaged to “look” new. Meanies! Oh well, now I’m sighing with relief.
Great review!
I haven’t read it but I want to!
